Frame material and brand matter less than three checkable specifications: how wide the tires measure, how low the first gear goes, and where the bars put your hands.

A spec sheet gives you thirty lines and most of them do not matter much. The frame material argument, aluminum against steel against whatever a brand calls its proprietary alloy, occupies far more shop conversation than it deserves, because two bikes built from the same tubing can feel entirely different depending on what is bolted to them. Three specifications do most of the work: the width of the tires, the range of the gears at the low end, and the position and shape of the handlebar. All three are printed somewhere, all three are checkable before you hand over money, and all three are changeable afterward at varying cost.

What 32mm and 45mm tires actually do underneath you

Tire width is the single cheapest change to how a bike rides, and the one most often decided by whoever built the bike rather than whoever rides it. A 32mm tire run at moderate pressure is quick on smooth pavement, light in the hand, and reasonably forgiving over expansion joints and patched asphalt. Put the same bike on crushed limestone or a rail trail after rain and the ride turns nervous, because the contact patch is small and the air volume too low to absorb anything. A 45mm tire at lower pressure floats over that surface, and the penalty on pavement is smaller than most riders expect: a little more weight, a little more roll, considerably less rattle.

The careful reader checks two numbers rather than one. The first is the width printed on the tire, which is a nominal figure, and the second is the internal width of the rim, because the same casing measures several millimeters wider on a broad rim than on a narrow one. Then check clearance, meaning the gap between the tire and the frame, fork and any fender mounts, since a frame that fits 45mm bare will not fit 45mm with fenders. If the shop cannot tell you the maximum tire the frame accepts, that number exists on the manufacturer's site, and it is worth finding.

Why the low gear matters more than the high one

Bikes are sold by the number of speeds, which tells you almost nothing. What matters on a loaded bike, meaning one carrying groceries, a laptop, a child seat or all three, is how low the lowest gear goes, because that is the gear you need on the one hill between the store and home. The useful measure is gear inches or the simple ratio of chainring teeth to the largest rear cog. A 34-tooth chainring paired with a 34-tooth cog gives a one-to-one ratio, which most riders can turn up a steep grade with weight aboard. Anything meaningfully higher than that at the bottom end will have you walking.

The high end is easier to ignore than it sounds. Above roughly twenty miles an hour on flat pavement, an upright rider runs out of aerodynamics long before running out of gears, and the top two cogs on a wide-range cassette go largely unused on a commute. So when comparing two bikes, read the drivetrain from the bottom up: count the teeth on the largest rear sprocket, count the teeth on the smallest chainring, and compare that pair rather than the marketing number stamped on the shifter.

Where the bars put your wrists and your neck

A flat bar holds the wrists in a pronated position, palms down, which is fine for twenty minutes and starts to ache at forty. A swept bar, with anything from fifteen to forty-five degrees of backsweep, rotates the hands toward a natural handshake angle and takes the strain off the outer wrist and the ulnar nerve. Height matters just as much as sweep, since a bar sitting low relative to the saddle loads the hands with body weight and asks the neck to hold the head up against a bent spine. The number to look for is stack, or failing that, the visible stack of spacers under the stem, which tells you how much upward adjustment remains.

This is the specification most easily fixed after purchase and most often left alone. A swept bar and a shorter, taller stem together cost less than a wheel, and they change the bike more than a lighter frame would. The Consumer Product Safety Commission sets the federal requirements bicycles sold in the United States must meet, covering reflectors, braking and assembly, and fit sits outside that scope entirely: it is the buyer's to get right, and it is worth an hour on the shop floor.

Take the three numbers with you, written down. Maximum tire clearance with fenders, the largest rear cog paired with the smallest chainring, and how much spacer sits under the stem. A bike that answers all three well will suit the errand, the bike path and the ride to work, whatever the frame is made of.
